When we’re children, we treat the world like everything is working in our favour. We are excited about life and we believe that we can accomplish anything. However, as we grow older, people start to tell us that our dreams are unrealistic. And that’s when we start dimming our light.
Growing up has come to mean stepping into a box that was created for you by society. This means that many of us are refusing to live up to our full potential because we’ve been told to just be like everybody else. But where’s the fun in that? Where’s the fun in doing things the way they’ve always been done? Where’s the fun in acting like the girl next door because somebody told you girls aren’t supposed to be ambitious?
For years, people told me I was too much. So I tried to reduce myself. They said my smile was too wide, I closed my mouth. They said my voice was too loud. So I turned down the volume. They said my dreams were too big. So I made them smaller. The shape-shifting game continued until even I was confused about my identity.
Despite all this however, they weren’t satisfied. Then I realized that what they really wanted was for me to disappear. They wanted me to be silent, agreeable and therefore invisible. So now I’m done. I’m so done shrinking to make other people feel better. I refuse to do this world a disservice by being less than God created me to be. I am the light of the world, and I will dim that light no more.
So I say to you, don’t be afraid to be yourself, your full magnificent self. Anybody who can’t handle it can find a seat at the back and watch you shine. You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. The world needs you, all of you. So bring it on.
